DHEA and Inflammation

Early research at Inflabloc Pharmaceuticals focussed on the benefits of the weak adrenal steroid dehydroepiandosterone (DHEA) in the suppression, inhibition, or amelioration of inflammation.

Although the anti-inflammatory effect of DHEA is not well understood, researchers are beginning to elucidate the cascade of pathways. It is accepted that DHEA can inhibit both the acute and chronic inflammatory responses of cells at the molecular level and most importantly, at the organ level.

Inflabloc Pharmaceuticals has demonstrated that DHEA supresses immune cell activation and the subsequent recruitment of inflammatory cells. This research is further refined to show that DHEA interrupts multiple pathways that can lead to pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-a, IL-8, and IFN-g at the post-transcriptional and transcriptional level of expression.

Moreover, DHEA disrupts the inflammatory signal transduction pathway through affecting the action of specific MAP kinases. The exact site of initiation of DHEA has not yet been determined, but the cellular membrane is certainly involved.
