Inflammatory Bowel Disease Animal Model

The in vivo model used to evaluate potential drug candidates for inflammatory bowel disease is TNBS induced colitis in the rat.  This validated model mimics many of the symptoms and molecular interactions seen in inflammatory bowel disease.

When the IBD animal model is treated with only DHEA at low doses, DHEA is ineffective on indicators of inflammation.

At higher doses, DHEA yields a reduction in colonic lesions, MPO activity, and colonic TNF-a. This dose also shows equivalent efficacy to that of Remicade ™ , an FDA-approved treatment for Crohn’s Disease, and better efficacy when compared to sulfasalazine, a conventional therapy used to treat IBD.

With IP-1003, a fixed drug combination with DHEA as a primary active ingredient, however, synergistic improvements are observed. Most notable are reductions in white cell inflammation, in TNF-a tissue levels, and in IL-6. Remarkably, the improvements of the DHEA combination product are greater than those observed in treatments with Remicade ™ .
